Acai Berries…Are they a magic food?

There has been a lot of news lately about acai berries the new magic food. They have been said to have great health benefits. The Amherst College’s Acai Report 2005 states these berries contain antioxidants, omega fats 3,6, and 9, amino Acids, proteins, xanthones, anthocyanins, dietary fiber, essential minerals – iron, potassium, phosphorus calcium, and phyonutrients. They claim this magiv food will cause:

  • Increased Energy
  • Resistance to colds and flu
  • Healthy and more youthful skin
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved eyesight
  • preventionn of degenerate diseases
  • slowing of the aging process
  • promotion of weight loss

So what are acai berries exactly? Acai Berry Studies states:

  • The acai berry (pronounced “ah-sigh-ee”) is a small grape-sized berry that grows in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. Natives of the region have harvested this berry as part of their diet for hundreds of years. The much desired acai fruit is only 10% of the actual berry. The other 90% is made up of the seed or pit. The acai berry is harvested by the thousands and put through a process that separates the pulp from the seed to produce a thick, edible puree.

These berries were brought to the main stream by Dr. Mehmet Oz. Oz states that acai is as good as any other healthful food, not any better

So are they really this good or is this magic food to good to be true?  One study claimed to see no effects other than the gag-inducing effect. There are also many studies claiming each of the benefits listed above. This is just a reminder to be cautious of the best new diet product and do your own research.

Since I’ve not been able to try acai berries myself, I don’t have a solid opinion. I will post a full report after I’ve gotten a chance to test the berries myself.
