Exercising with a workout partner can produce better fitness results. The right partner will provide motivation and competition to help increase the intensity of your workouts. Having a spotter also really helps ease your mind when you are lifting heavier weights. There are many benefits of exercising with another person.
Everyone will have a different “perfect” workout partner. Of course you will want to get along with this person as a friend. It will make the workouts more enjoyable. Exercising should be a stress relieving activity so don’t workout with anyone who is negative all the time. You want motivation while exercising. Sometimes you will show up to the gym and not feel like exercising in anyway. A good workout partner is perfect to help push past that bad day.
My best workout partners have been able to push me farther than I would have gone on my own. If that was by their motivation they gave me or by the fact I didn’t want them to get stronger than me, either way it made me stay focused and I achieved better results. Typically, you want to find a workout partner that has the same goals as you and is relatively close to your current strength. This isn’t usually a problem, but it can be a pain to switch out hundreds of pounds every set. If your exercise buddy is trying to get ripped for beach season but you are trying to bulk up to hit that 300 pound bench press, maybe they won’t be the best partner for you at this time. These two types of goals usually will require slightly different exercise routines. You want to try and be on the same page with your partner.
